Adyen refusal reasons explained

Checked

When Adyen cannot complete a payment it returns a resultCode (Refused, Error or Cancelled) with a refusalReason and a numeric refusalReasonCode. Some reasons are the shopper's bank declining, some are fraud screening, some are 3D Secure problems, and a few are cancellations. Each page explains one refusal reason in plain words, whether a retry is allowed under card scheme rules, and how PlatformDTC handles the matching decline.

Refusal codeMeaning
2The issuer refused the payment and gave no usable reason; Adyen's catch-all refusal.
3The issuer referred the payment: it wants the cardholder (or merchant) to contact it first.
4Something failed on the acquirer's side, not with the shopper's card.
5The card is blocked and cannot be used.
6The card's expiry date has passed.
7An amount mismatch occurred while the payment was being processed.
8The card number is wrong or does not exist.
9Adyen could not reach the shopper's bank to authorize the payment.
10The shopper's bank does not support or allow this type of transaction on the card.
113D Secure authentication was not done or did not succeed.
12The card does not have enough money or credit for this amount.
14The acquirer flagged the payment as possible fraud.
15The transaction was cancelled before it completed.
16The shopper cancelled the payment before completing it.
20Adyen's pre-authorization risk checks scored the payment 100 or more and refused it.
21The transaction was not submitted correctly for processing.
22Pre- and post-authorization risk checks together scored 100 or more, so the payment was refused.
23The issuer or acquirer does not permit this transaction on this card (raw 57 or 58).
24The card security code (CVC) entered is wrong.
25The issuer restricted where this card can be used (raw 62).
26The shopper asked their bank to stop this subscription or all recurring payments (raw R0, R1, R3).
27A specific refusal Adyen could not reliably map to one of its named reasons.
28The amount is above the spending limit allowed on the card (raw 61).
29The card has been used more times than its issuer allows in the period (raw 65).
31The shopper's bank reported the payment as suspected fraud (raw 59 or 34).
32The billing address entered does not match the bank's records.
38The issuer declined the exemption request and requires 3D Secure for this payment.
39The 3D Secure result never arrived from the card scheme's directory server.
423D Secure failed because of a problem at the card network or issuer.
46Adyen stopped the attempt itself so you are not charged scheme penalty fees for excessive retries.
50The shopper disabled the token the merchant used for recurring charges.

Retry rules

Visa sorts declines into four categories. Category 1 (issuer will not approve, such as pick up card, closed account or stop payment) must never be retried. Categories 2, 3 and 4 allow up to 15 reattempts in 30 days.

Mastercard advice codes 03 and 21 mean do not try again, and Mastercard charges $0.10 per reattempt beyond 10 in 24 hours for them. Advice codes 24 to 30 give timed retries for insufficient funds.

What to tell the shopper

Adyen advises not exposing refusal details or raw responses to shoppers. Use a plain message such as "Your payment was declined. Please try another card or contact your bank."

For developers

Refusals come back with HTTP 200, so check resultCode, refusalReason and refusalReasonCode. Enable raw acquirer results in the Customer Area to get additionalData.refusalReasonRaw and, for Visa and Mastercard on Adyen's own acquiring, refusalCodeRaw. The same refusal values appear in CAPTURE_FAILED and REFUND_FAILED webhooks.

Frequently asked questions

Does PlatformDTC work with Adyen?
No. PlatformDTC checkout runs on Stripe and PayPal, and a store can also connect its own Authorize.Net, Checkout.com or NMI account.
Where do I see the real bank code behind an Adyen refusal?
Enable raw acquirer results in your Adyen Customer Area; responses then include refusalReasonRaw, such as 51 Insufficient funds.
