What does Adyen refusal reason 6 “Expired Card” mean?

Checked

Adyen refusal reason 6, "Expired Card", means the card used for the transaction has expired and is therefore unusable. Adyen's raw responses list it as 54 Expired card: the expiry date is in the past, so the shopper should correct the date or use another payment method. Retrying the same details will never succeed; subscription customers need to update their stored card.

What PlatformDTC does

PlatformDTC does not connect to Adyen; its checkout runs on Stripe and PayPal. The same answer arrives as Stripe's expired_card; PlatformDTC never retries it, tells the customer "the card has expired" and sends a link to update the card.

Why it happens

Raw response 54 means the expiry date has passed. Often the bank already mailed a replacement with a new date, or the shopper typed an old date from memory.

What the shopper can do

Use the expiry date on the card in your wallet now. If your bank sent a replacement card, use that one.

What the store can do

For recurring billing, prompt customers to update their card before it expires.

For developers

resultCode "Refused", refusalReasonCode "6", raw 54 Expired card. Visa places 54 in category 3 (issuer cannot approve with these details): up to 15 reattempts in 30 days, but only new details will succeed.
