Braintree · Decline codes

What does Braintree 2057 “Issuer or Cardholder has put a restriction on the card” mean?

Checked

Braintree 2057 “Issuer or Cardholder has put a restriction on the card” means the card has a block set by the bank or by the cardholder, such as no online or foreign purchases. Braintree types it soft and maps it to Visa category 2, so up to 15 retries in 30 days are allowed, but it will keep failing until the shopper lifts the restriction.

What PlatformDTC does

PlatformDTC does not connect to Braintree. Stripe's restricted_card and the network's Visa 62 are the same answer, and PlatformDTC is stricter than Visa here: it never retries them, and asks the subscriber to update the payment method.

Why it happens

Cardholders can switch off online, foreign or recurring payments in their banking app; banks restrict cards for their own reasons too.

What the shopper can do

Check card settings in your banking app (online, foreign or recurring payments) or call the bank.

What the store can do

Ask the shopper to check their card controls or call the bank, or to pay another way.

For developers

Braintree returns processor_response_code 2057 with processor_response_text “Issuer or Cardholder has put a restriction on the card” and processor_response_type “soft_declined” on the Transaction object. Braintree maps it to Visa category 2 (issuer cannot approve at this time): at most 15 retries in 30 days.
