What does PayPal processor response code 7710 mean?
Checked
PayPal processor response code 7710 (AUTHENTICATION_FAILED) means the cardholder authentication step, such as 3-D Secure, did not succeed, so the payment wasn't approved. The shopper may have cancelled, entered a wrong code or timed out. They should try again and complete the bank's check, or use another card; retrying without authentication won't work.

What PlatformDTC does
PlatformDTC treats PayPal 7710 as authentication needed (authentication_required). No 3-D Secure prompt can reach a customer who isn't there, so on either retry schedule (the default Fixed schedule or Smart retry) a renewal declined this way is not retried blindly: it is held past due and the customer gets an email asking them to confirm the payment with their bank.
Why it happens
The bank asked the shopper to prove it was them, and that proof failed or was abandoned.
What the shopper can do
Try again and approve the payment in your bank's app or with the code it sends.
If you don't get the prompt, contact your bank or use another card.
What the store can do
Let the shopper restart the payment so the bank's check can run again.
Frequent failures on one card can be a fraud signal; review before shipping.
For developers
PayPal returns 7710 in processor_response.response_code on the capture (purchase_units[].payments.captures[]) or authorization of a card payment. PayPal's own name for it is AUTHENTICATION_FAILED.
Declined card payments can also carry payment_advice_code in processor_response, the card network's advice; store it next to the response code.
Frequently asked questions
- Why did authentication fail when the shopper is the real cardholder?
- PayPal's label doesn't say. A prompt that timed out or was dismissed, or a code typed wrongly, all end the check without success.
- Is 7710 a decline from the bank?
- It's a failed authentication. Without it, the bank won't approve the payment.
