What does PayPal processor response code 8000 mean?
Checked
PayPal processor response code 8000 (PROCESSOR_SYSTEM_ERROR) means a system error at the card processor stopped the payment. It isn't a refusal by the bank and says nothing about the shopper's card or funds. Trying again later can succeed; if it repeats, the shopper can use another method while the error clears.

- Retried 2, 5 and 8 days later, 4 attempts at most
What PlatformDTC does
PlatformDTC files PayPal 8000 as processing_error, a temporary condition. With Smart retry on, a renewal is retried 2, 5 and 8 days after the first decline (at most 4 attempts), by default at 14:00 in the subscriber's local time, and never twice within 24 hours. If all fail, the subscription is held past due, not cancelled.
Why it happens
The processor that sits between PayPal and the card networks hit an internal error.
What the shopper can do
Wait a little and try again, or pay with another method.
What the store can do
Retry later rather than asking for a new card.
If 8000 hits many orders at once, it's an outage; pause retries until it clears.
For developers
PayPal returns 8000 in processor_response.response_code on the capture (purchase_units[].payments.captures[]) or authorization of a card payment. PayPal's own name for it is PROCESSOR_SYSTEM_ERROR.
Keep the raw code with the order. PayPal's label is the only official meaning, and the exact code tells support which branch of PayPal's table fired.
Frequently asked questions
- Did the bank decline the card with 8000?
- No. PayPal labels it a processor system error, before any bank decision.
- Should I ask the customer for a new card after 8000?
- Not at first. The card is probably fine; retry once the error has passed.
