What does Braintree 2020 “Violation” mean?
Checked
Braintree 2020 “Violation” is a bank refusal that Braintree types as hard, and its only guidance is that the customer must contact their bank for more information. Braintree maps it to Visa category 2 (cannot approve at this time), which allows up to 15 retries in 30 days, but a retry before the shopper speaks to the bank rarely changes the answer.

What PlatformDTC does
PlatformDTC does not connect to Braintree. On its Stripe checkout PlatformDTC reads both Stripe's label and the raw network code; whichever is stricter decides, so a vague refusal gets one renewal retry after 48–72 hours and a never-approve code gets none.
Why it happens
Braintree does not document what violation the bank means. It is the issuer's decision, not a rule in your account.
What the shopper can do
Call the bank on the number on the card to find out what blocked the payment.
What the store can do
Ask the shopper to call the bank, or offer another payment method. Do not stack retries on the same card.
For developers
Braintree returns processor_response_code 2020 with processor_response_text “Violation” and processor_response_type “hard_declined” on the Transaction object. Braintree maps it to Visa category 2 (issuer cannot approve at this time): at most 15 retries in 30 days.
