What does Braintree 2026 “Invalid Merchant ID” mean?
Checked
Braintree 2026 “Invalid Merchant ID” usually means the shopper's bank declined because the card does not support this transaction type. Braintree types it soft and maps it to Visa category 2, so up to 15 retries in 30 days are allowed. If many different customers hit it, Braintree says it may be a connectivity or setup problem on your account.

What PlatformDTC does
PlatformDTC does not connect to Braintree. The network answer for an invalid merchant is Visa 03, which Visa places in category 2. On PlatformDTC's Stripe rail, a fault on the account side rather than the card (a revoked key, lost access to the store's account, an outage) is not booked as the customer's decline: the renewal stays due, is re-charged by a 15-minute sweep once fixed, and the subscriber gets no “payment failed” email.
Why it happens
Either the card cannot be used for your kind of transaction, or, when it repeats for everyone, the merchant ID is not set up correctly at the processor.
What the store can do
Look at whether it is one card or many. One card: ask for another. Many: contact Braintree.
For developers
Braintree returns processor_response_code 2026 with processor_response_text “Invalid Merchant ID” and processor_response_type “soft_declined” on the Transaction object. Braintree maps it to Visa category 2 (issuer cannot approve at this time): at most 15 retries in 30 days.
