What PlatformDTC does
PlatformDTC does not connect to Braintree. Stripe reports the same stop as stop_payment_order or revocation_of_authorization (Visa R0 or R1), which PlatformDTC never retries: the renewal is held and the subscriber is asked to update the payment method.
Why it happens
The customer told their bank to block this charge, often because they believe they cancelled or did not recognise the merchant name.
What the store can do
Contact the customer before anything else. Make sure your cancellation flow is easy and your billing name is recognisable, which prevents stop-payment requests and disputes.
For developers
Braintree returns processor_response_code 2017 with processor_response_text “Cardholder Stopped Billing” and processor_response_type “hard_declined” on the Transaction object. Braintree maps it to Visa category 1 (issuer will never approve): Visa fines every retry of the same card.
Frequently asked questions
- Can I charge again after Braintree 2017?
- Not the same way. The cardholder blocked it; Visa category 1 forbids retries. Get the customer's fresh consent.
- Is 2017 a chargeback?
- No, it is a declined authorization. But it signals an unhappy customer who could dispute later charges.
