Visa for online stores: how acceptance, security and disputes work
Checked
Visa is a global card network, and Stripe lets accounts in every country it serves accept Visa from cardholders worldwide, including through Apple Pay and Google Pay. Its online security check is Visa Secure, Visa's EMV 3-D Secure program. Visa also watches each seller's disputes and fraud reports through VAMP, the Visa Acquirer Monitoring Program; a store above its limits can be fined. Keeping refunds fast and descriptors clear matters more for Visa than for any other network.

What PlatformDTC does
PlatformDTC checkout takes Visa in the card form, through Apple Pay and Google Pay, and on subscriptions; a store can refuse Visa, or Visa prepaid cards, under Settings, and can ask for 3D Secure only on risky card payments.
How VAMP counts against your store
Each month Visa adds up a seller's disputes (all kinds, from its TC15 reports) and fraud reports (TC40 early fraud warnings) and divides them by the number of captured payments. A transaction that appears in both reports counts twice.
Stripe's summary of Visa's thresholds: a store is non-compliant at a count of 5 and a ratio of 0.5%. It becomes excessive at 1,500 and 1.5% in Asia Pacific, Canada, Europe, the US and Latin America, or 150 and 2.2% in CEMEA. Visa charges fees above the excessive line and may charge them above the non-compliant line. Disputes solved through pre-dispute tools and TC40s that qualify for Compelling Evidence 3.0 are left out.
Visa Secure and liability
Visa Secure is Visa's name for EMV 3-D Secure: the bank confirms the cardholder, often silently and sometimes with a code or biometric check. Stripe says a fraud dispute on a payment that passed 3D Secure usually shifts liability to the issuing bank, but that is not guaranteed for any single payment.
What PlatformDTC adds
A store can switch on 3D Secure for risky card payments. It asks for authentication when the same card paid another order in the last 24 hours, when the checkout already saw two or more declines, or when the email paid before with a different card. Apple Pay and Google Pay are never challenged, because the phone has already confirmed the shopper.
Frequently asked questions
- Does a refund remove a Visa fraud report from VAMP?
- No. Stripe says a refund does not affect a fraud warning already filed; only a reversal, usually within 2 hours of capture, can stop the report.
- Is Visa Secure required?
- Under Strong Customer Authentication rules in the EEA and similar rules in the UK, India, Japan and Australia, Stripe says 3D Secure may be required. Elsewhere it is optional and can be used to cut fraud.
- Where can I see my VAMP numbers on Stripe?
- Stripe shows them in a VAMP dashboard with Visa's monthly figures by statement descriptor and Stripe's own daily estimate.
