UnionPay cards for online stores: acceptance, security and limits
Checked
China UnionPay is China's card network. On Stripe, businesses in Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore, the UK, the US, Switzerland and the EEA except Iceland can accept UnionPay cards from cardholders anywhere. 3D Secure is supported. Unlike the other big networks, Stripe does not support UnionPay through wallets such as Apple Pay and Google Pay, so UnionPay holders pay by typing their card into the card form.

What PlatformDTC does
PlatformDTC checkout takes UnionPay cards typed into the Stripe card form, not through Apple Pay or Google Pay, and an owner can refuse UnionPay alone under Settings, Payments, Payment methods, Cards if it draws fraud.
Card form only
Because Stripe does not support UnionPay in wallets, a shopper with only a UnionPay card skips the express row and uses the card form. Saving the card for later payments and subscriptions works across all brands, Stripe says.
Who can accept UnionPay
Stripe's seller list for UnionPay is shorter than for Visa or Mastercard: Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore, the UK, the US, Switzerland and the EEA except Iceland. A Japanese or Mexican Stripe account, for example, cannot take UnionPay.
Frequently asked questions
- Can a Chinese shopper pay a US store with UnionPay?
- Yes, if the US store's processor accepts it. The US is in Stripe's UnionPay seller list and cardholders can be anywhere.
- Does PlatformDTC checkout offer Alipay or WeChat Pay for Chinese shoppers?
- No. Chinese shoppers can pay by UnionPay, Visa or Mastercard card, or by PayPal in currencies PayPal supports.
