PromptPay for online stores: how Thai shoppers pay by QR
Checked
PromptPay is Thailand's national instant payment system, launched in 2016 according to the Bank of Thailand. At an online checkout the shopper scans a PromptPay QR code with a Thai banking app and approves; the store is told instantly. Payments are in Thai baht. Refunds need the shopper's bank account number, which Stripe collects by email. On Stripe, PromptPay is open to Thai businesses, with US businesses on a private preview waitlist.

PlatformDTC checkout does not offer PromptPay today. Thai shoppers can pay by card, PayPal in baht, or Apple Pay and Google Pay where their device and bank support them.
How a shopper pays with PromptPay
The shopper picks PromptPay, scans the QR code with their preferred Thai banking app and authorises the payment. The Bank of Thailand explains that PromptPay also lets people send money using a citizen ID, mobile number or bank account number, and that Thai QR Payment works by scanning a QR code in a banking app.
Watch-outs for your store
- Refunds are not automatic: the shopper must reply to Stripe's email with the account number they paid from, or the refund can fail.
- If a shopper scans the same QR code again, they may be charged twice. Stripe returns the extra money to your balance, and you refund the shopper outside Stripe.
- The shopper's statement shows STRIPE PAYMENTS (THAILAND) LTD, not your store name.
Frequently asked questions
