Boleto for online stores: how Boleto Bancário works
Checked
Boleto (Boleto Bancário) is Brazil's official payment slip, regulated by the Central Bank of Brazil. The shopper gives their contact and tax ID details, receives a voucher number or PDF, and pays it before it expires at a bank, ATM, authorised agency or online banking. Stripe confirms payment, typically the next business day. Boletos run from R$5 to R$49,999.99, cannot be charged back, cannot be refunded through Stripe, and are only for Brazilian businesses.

How a shopper pays with Boleto
The shopper chooses Boleto and enters their contact details and tax ID. Stripe shows a hosted voucher page where they copy the Boleto number or download the PDF. They pay it through a bank, ATM, authorised agency or online banking before the voucher expires. Stripe then confirms asynchronously, usually on the next business day.
What it means for your store
- Orders wait: you should not ship until Stripe confirms payment, which can be days after the order if the shopper pays late in the voucher window.
- No refunds through Stripe; plan another way to return money if needed.
- No chargebacks, though Stripe contacts you about rare bank-side irregularities.
- Only Brazilian Stripe accounts can accept Boleto.
