UPI for online stores: how Indian shoppers pay with UPI
Checked
UPI is India's real-time payment system, built by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI). The shopper approves in their banking or wallet app: on a computer they scan a QR code, on a phone they are sent to their UPI app. Payments are in rupees from ₹1 to ₹1,00,000. UPI AutoPay mandates allow recurring charges of up to ₹15,000. Refunds are allowed for 60 days, and accepted bank disputes cannot be contested.

What PlatformDTC does
UPI is not available on PlatformDTC checkout today, and the rupee is outside PayPal's 22 currencies there, so Indian shoppers pay by card; Stripe notes Google Pay is not available in India.
How a shopper pays with UPI
The shopper chooses UPI and approves in the bank or wallet app they already use. Desktop checkouts show a QR code to scan; mobile checkouts open the UPI app directly. For subscriptions, the shopper approves a mandate once in their UPI app, and later charges run within its terms.
Who can accept UPI through Stripe
Stripe lists UPI for Stripe accounts in the US, UK, Canada, Australia, Singapore, Switzerland and EU countries, so businesses outside India can sell to Indian shoppers in rupees. Disputes are rare because the shopper authenticates with their bank, but a shopper can dispute a debit for a failed transaction or for goods not received.
