What does PayPal processor response code PPRN mean?
Checked
PayPal processor response code PPRN (REATTEMPT_NOT_PERMITTED) means a further attempt on this payment is not permitted, so it was refused. PayPal gives no reason beyond that label, but the instruction is plain: stop. Card networks also cap how often a declined card may be retried. The shopper should use another card; the merchant should not retry the same card.

What PlatformDTC does
PlatformDTC treats PPRN as previously_declined_do_not_retry, a hard decline. On either retry schedule (the default Fixed schedule or Smart retry), nothing is retried on the same card; the merchant dashboard says the customer needs to pay with a different card, and the customer receives a signed update-card link (no login) plus up to 4 reminders per billing cycle.
Why it happens
PayPal refused to send another attempt. Its label says only that a reattempt isn't permitted; previous declines on the same card are the usual reason such a block exists.
What the shopper can do
Pay with another card or your PayPal balance.
What the store can do
Treat PPRN as a hard stop and ask the customer for another payment method.
Review your retry schedule: too many attempts on one card is what networks police.
For developers
PayPal returns PPRN in processor_response.response_code on the capture (purchase_units[].payments.captures[]) or authorization of a card payment. PayPal's own name for it is REATTEMPT_NOT_PERMITTED.
Keep the raw code with the order. PayPal's label is the only official meaning, and the exact code tells support which branch of PayPal's table fired.
Frequently asked questions
- Why would PayPal refuse to retry a card?
- PayPal doesn't explain beyond the label. For context, card networks cap reattempts on declined cards: Visa allows up to 20 in 30 days for retryable declines and none after its never-approve codes.
- Can I wait and retry PPRN later?
- PlatformDTC records it as previously_declined_do_not_retry and never retries it automatically.
