What does PayPal processor response code 5180 mean?
Checked
PayPal processor response code 5180 (INVALID_OR_RESTRICTED_CARD) means the card is invalid or restricted for this payment. PayPal's instruction is: "Try using another card. Do not retry the same card." The shopper should pay with a different card or ask their bank about the restriction; the merchant should not resend the same card.

What PlatformDTC does
PlatformDTC maps PayPal 5180 to restricted_card, a decline no retry can fix. On either retry schedule (the default Fixed schedule or Smart retry), the renewal is never re-attempted on that card: the subscription is held past due (not cancelled) and the customer gets a one-click update-card link, re-sent up to 4 times per cycle. If those reminders run out and the store's auto-cancel setting is on, the subscription ends as involuntary churn.
Why it happens
The card is either not valid or carries a restriction, for example on the type of purchase or the country. PayPal doesn't say which.
What the shopper can do
Pay with another card or your PayPal balance.
Your bank can tell you what restriction applies to this card.
What the store can do
Ask the customer for a different card instead of retrying.
On subscriptions, send a card-update request.
For developers
PayPal returns 5180 in processor_response.response_code on the capture (purchase_units[].payments.captures[]) or authorization of a card payment. PayPal's own name for it is INVALID_OR_RESTRICTED_CARD.
Keep the raw code with the order. PayPal's label is the only official meaning, and the exact code tells support which branch of PayPal's table fired.
Frequently asked questions
- Can a restricted card be unrestricted?
- Sometimes, if the cardholder asks the bank to lift a limit such as online or overseas use. The store can't do it for them.
- Should 5180 be retried later?
- PayPal says not to retry the same card. A different card, or the same card after the bank lifts the restriction, is the way through.
