What does PayPal processor response code 5710 mean?
Checked
PayPal processor response code 5710 (TX_ATTEMPTS_EXCEED_LIMIT) means the number of payment attempts on the card has gone over a limit, so this one was declined. It isn't a verdict on the card; it clears with time. The shopper should stop retrying and wait, or use another card. Merchants should space retries out rather than resubmitting.

What PlatformDTC does
On a PayPal card payment, 5710 becomes card_velocity_exceeded in PlatformDTC, which counts it as something that clears with time. With Smart retry on, renewals get the short ladder: 2, 5 and 8 days after the first decline, 4 attempts at most, then the subscription waits in past due for the customer.
Why it happens
Too many attempts in a short time hit a limit. Repeated pay-button presses, several orders at once, or an automated retry loop can all trigger it.
What the shopper can do
Stop trying for now; wait a while or use a different card.
What the store can do
Space out retries on saved cards; quick repeats make this worse.
Check that your checkout doesn't send several attempts per click.
For developers
PayPal returns 5710 in processor_response.response_code on the capture (purchase_units[].payments.captures[]) or authorization of a card payment. PayPal's own name for it is TX_ATTEMPTS_EXCEED_LIMIT.
Declined card payments can also carry payment_advice_code in processor_response, the card network's advice; store it next to the response code.
Frequently asked questions
