What does PayPal processor response code PPAX mean?
Checked
PayPal processor response code PPAX (AMOUNT_EXCEEDED) means the payment amount went over a limit, so it was declined. PayPal's label doesn't say whose limit; it could be the card's credit or spending limit. The shopper can pay a smaller amount, wait until the limit resets or the bill is paid, or use another card.

What PlatformDTC does
PlatformDTC files PayPal PPAX under insufficient funds (as card_limit_reached). With Smart retry on, a PayPal subscription renewal rides the longer PayPal ladder: up to 7 attempts, each at least 3 days after the last, moved to the subscriber's next payday when one falls within a week, inside a window of at least 24 days. The customer's email asks them to have funds ready by the retry date, and the subscription is held past due, never cancelled, if every attempt fails.
Why it happens
The amount was more than a limit allowed. PayPal names only AMOUNT_EXCEEDED.
What the shopper can do
Try another card, split the order, or wait until your available credit is restored.
What the store can do
Offer another payment method for large orders.
On renewals, a retry after the customer's next payday has the best chance.
For developers
PayPal returns PPAX in processor_response.response_code on the capture (purchase_units[].payments.captures[]) or authorization of a card payment. PayPal's own name for it is AMOUNT_EXCEEDED.
Declined card payments can also carry payment_advice_code in processor_response, the card network's advice; store it next to the response code.
Frequently asked questions
- Is PPAX the same as insufficient funds?
- PayPal lists it separately (5120 is INSUFFICIENT_FUNDS). PlatformDTC treats both as funds-type declines.
- Will a smaller amount go through?
- Often, if the limit was the cause. PayPal doesn't publish the limit.
