What does PayPal processor response code PP06 mean?

Checked

PayPal processor response code PP06 (ACCOUNT_CLOSED) means the account behind the card is closed; PayPal's description is "A previously open account is now closed." No retry can succeed. The shopper needs a different card or payment method, and merchants should ask subscribers whose saved card returns PP06 to add a new one.

What PlatformDTC does

PlatformDTC maps PayPal PP06 to invalid_account, a decline no retry can fix. On either retry schedule (the default Fixed schedule or Smart retry), the renewal is never re-attempted on that card: the subscription is held past due (not cancelled) and the customer gets a one-click update-card link, re-sent up to 4 times per cycle. If those reminders run out and the store's auto-cancel setting is on, the subscription ends as involuntary churn.

Why it happens

The account was open before and has since been closed by the bank or the cardholder.

What the shopper can do

Use your new or another card, or your PayPal balance.

What the store can do

Stop charging the old card and send the customer an update-card request.

For developers

PayPal returns PP06 in processor_response.response_code on the capture (purchase_units[].payments.captures[]) or authorization of a card payment. PayPal's own name for it is ACCOUNT_CLOSED.

Declined card payments can also carry payment_advice_code in processor_response, the card network's advice; store it next to the response code.
