What does PayPal processor response code 5200 mean?
Checked
PayPal processor response code 5200 (DUPLICATE_TRANSACTION) means the payment was refused as a duplicate of one already submitted. Before doing anything else, the merchant should check whether the first payment went through, so the customer isn't charged twice. If it didn't, a fresh, single attempt is fine; the shopper should not keep pressing pay.

What PlatformDTC does
PayPal 5200 is not one of the processor codes PlatformDTC maps, so the decline is recorded under the Orders API issue PayPal returned, or as INSTRUMENT_DECLINED, a generic PayPal refusal, when there is none; the raw 5200 stays in the failure message. With Smart retry on, a PayPal subscription renewal then follows the PayPal ladder: up to 7 attempts at least 3 days apart, moved to the next payday within a week, inside a window of at least 24 days.
Why it happens
The same payment details arrived twice in a short time: a double click, a page refresh, or an automatic retry that fired too soon.
What the shopper can do
Wait and check your order confirmation or email; the first payment may have succeeded.
What the store can do
Look up the order in PayPal before retrying.
Make sure a double click or page refresh can't send the same payment twice.
For developers
PayPal returns 5200 in processor_response.response_code on the capture (purchase_units[].payments.captures[]) or authorization of a card payment. PayPal's own name for it is DUPLICATE_TRANSACTION.
Declined card payments can also carry payment_advice_code in processor_response, the card network's advice; store it next to the response code.
Frequently asked questions
- Was the customer charged twice?
- 5200 means the second attempt was refused, which protects against a double charge. Check whether the first one completed.
