What does PayPal processor response code 1320 mean?
Checked
PayPal processor response code 1320 (INVALID_CURRENCY_CODE) means the currency in the payment request was rejected. Either the code itself was invalid or the currency can't be used for this card or account. Resending the same request won't succeed; the store needs to charge in a supported currency, or the shopper needs a different card.

What PlatformDTC does
PlatformDTC treats 1320 as currency_not_supported, a hard decline. On either retry schedule (the default Fixed schedule or Smart retry), nothing is retried on the same card; the merchant dashboard says the customer needs to pay with a different card, and the customer receives a signed update-card link (no login) plus up to 4 reminders per billing cycle.
Why it happens
The currency failed validation. PayPal's label doesn't separate a malformed code from a currency that simply isn't accepted in this combination.
What the shopper can do
Pay with another card or your PayPal balance; the store may also be able to charge in your local currency.
What the store can do
Confirm the currency on the order is one your PayPal account and card setup accept.
Don't retry the same request; it will be refused the same way.
For developers
PayPal returns 1320 in processor_response.response_code on the capture (purchase_units[].payments.captures[]) or authorization of a card payment. PayPal's own name for it is INVALID_CURRENCY_CODE.
Declined card payments can also carry payment_advice_code in processor_response, the card network's advice; store it next to the response code.
Frequently asked questions
- Is 1320 the shopper's fault?
- Usually not. The currency comes from the store's checkout; the shopper's only workaround is a different card.
- Does PlatformDTC retry 1320?
- No. It is recorded as currency_not_supported, a hard decline, so with Smart retry on it is not re-attempted on that card.
