What does PayPal processor response code 1380 mean?
Checked
PayPal processor response code 1380 (INVALID_EXPIRATION) means the card's expiry date was refused. It was mistyped, is in the past, or doesn't match what the bank has on file. The shopper should re-enter the date from the card in hand or use another card; retrying the old date won't help.

What PlatformDTC does
On a PayPal card payment, PlatformDTC turns 1380 into expired_card. On either retry schedule (the default Fixed schedule or Smart retry) there is no retry on that card: the subscription waits in past due while the customer gets an update-card email (reason given: "the card has expired") and up to 4 reminders per cycle, 3 or more days apart.
Why it happens
The month or year doesn't match.
What the shopper can do
Check the date printed on the card you're holding and enter it again.
If you recently got a new card, use the new date.
What the store can do
For saved cards, ask the customer to update their card details.
Make sure your form doesn't swap month and year or trim the year.
For developers
PayPal returns 1380 in processor_response.response_code on the capture (purchase_units[].payments.captures[]) or authorization of a card payment. PayPal's own name for it is INVALID_EXPIRATION.
Declined card payments can also carry payment_advice_code in processor_response, the card network's advice; store it next to the response code.
Frequently asked questions
- Is 1380 the same as an expired card?
- Close. PayPal lists EXPIRED_CARD as 5400 and INVALID_EXPIRATION as 1380; PlatformDTC treats both as an expired card that needs new details.
- Can I retry 1380 without changing anything?
- No. The date is wrong for the bank, so the same request will be refused again.
