What does Braintree 2103 “PIN try exceeded” mean?

Checked

Braintree 2103 “PIN try exceeded” means the shopper entered a wrong PIN more times than the bank allows. Braintree types it soft and maps it to Visa category 3. The card will not accept PIN payments until the bank resets it, so the shopper should pay another way or contact the bank.

What PlatformDTC does

PlatformDTC does not connect to Braintree. Stripe's pin_try_exceeded (Visa 75) is the same answer; PlatformDTC never retries it, at checkout or on renewals, because an online payment cannot take a PIN: the renewal is held and the subscriber is asked for another card.

Why it happens

Repeated wrong PINs triggered the bank's lock.

What the store can do

Ask for another card or payment method.

For developers

Braintree returns processor_response_code 2103 with processor_response_text “PIN try exceeded” and processor_response_type “soft_declined” on the Transaction object. Braintree maps it to Visa category 3 (issuer cannot approve with these details): at most 15 retries in 30 days.
