What does Braintree 2031 “Encryption Error” mean?

Checked

Braintree 2031 “Encryption Error”, despite its name, means the cardholder's bank does not support $0.00 card verifications. Braintree types it hard and says to enable the Retry All Failed $0 option in your account to resolve it. The shopper's card may be perfectly fine; it is the zero-amount check that fails.

What PlatformDTC does

PlatformDTC does not connect to Braintree. Card checks on PlatformDTC run through Stripe or the store's own processor, and Braintree's $0 verification setting has no counterpart there.

Why it happens

Some issuers refuse zero-amount verifications, which Braintree runs when a card is saved or verified.

What the store can do

Enable Retry All Failed $0 in Braintree, or contact Braintree with questions.

For developers

Braintree returns processor_response_code 2031 with processor_response_text “Encryption Error” and processor_response_type “hard_declined” on the Transaction object.
