Kakao Pay for online stores: how to accept it from South Korea
Checked
Kakao Pay is a popular South Korean wallet. Through Stripe, a shopper in South Korea is redirected to Stripe's local processing partner, approves the payment and returns to the store; prices must be in Korean won, from 100 won. Businesses in the US, Japan, Hong Kong and much of Europe can accept Kakao Pay without a Korean company, but not businesses in Singapore. It supports subscriptions, and refunds and disputes both have 365-day windows.

What PlatformDTC does
PlatformDTC checkout does not offer Kakao Pay today. Shoppers in South Korea can pay by card or with Apple Pay; PayPal stays hidden when the store charges in Korean won, because won is not one of PayPal's currencies.
How a shopper pays with Kakao Pay
The shopper chooses Kakao Pay, is redirected to Stripe's local partner to authenticate and approve, and is then sent back to the store. Every item in the order must be priced in won, and Stripe asks for the customer's email address on Kakao Pay payments in Checkout.
Rules that apply when selling to South Korea
Stripe summarises local consumer rules that a store must plan for:
- Customers are generally entitled to a full refund within 7 days of receiving goods, unless used or damaged; non-refundable conditions must be shown clearly.
- If goods differ from what was promised, customers can ask for a refund within 3 months of purchase or 30 days of noticing, whichever comes first.
- Subscribers can cancel within 7 days of signing up for a full refund if unused, and must get notice and give consent 30 days before a price rise, plus a reminder 7 days before each payment.
