Google Pay for online stores: how it works and who can use it
Checked
Google Pay lets shoppers pay with any credit or debit card saved to their Google Account, including cards saved in Chrome, Google Play or on an Android phone, by pressing one button instead of filling in a card form. Google says it charges no extra fee to accept Google Pay; your processor's normal fees apply. Through Stripe, Google Pay works for businesses and shoppers worldwide except India, with card-style refunds and disputes and support for recurring payments.

What PlatformDTC does
PlatformDTC checkout offers Google Pay in the express row on every supported browser, beside Apple Pay, for one-time orders and subscriptions. A store's checkout only moves onto its own domain once Stripe reports Google Pay active there, Google Pay payments skip the risk-based 3D Secure check, and stores that use Authorize.Net or MyFatoorah can switch Google Pay on there too.
How a shopper pays with Google Pay
The shopper presses the Google Pay button, picks a card already saved to their Google Account and confirms. Google says the payment data is encrypted end to end from Google's servers to your payment processor. The page has to be served over HTTPS, and Stripe only shows the button when the shopper's device and browser meet Google's requirements.
Fraud protection depends on how the card was saved
Stripe explains that Google Pay cards come in three forms, and liability shift (fraud losses moving to the card's bank) differs between them.
| How the card was saved | Liability shift |
|---|---|
| Added to the Google Pay app on a phone (device token) | Yes, by default |
| Saved in Chrome, YouTube or Google Play (the real card number) | Yes, when 3D Secure is used |
| Saved as a card on file at a site that pays with Google Pay (e-commerce token) | Not supported; no 3D Secure either |
What it means for your store
Refunds work exactly like card refunds, full or partial. Disputes follow the card dispute process and you can send evidence in the same way. Money arrives on the standard payout schedule. Using Google Pay means agreeing to Google's terms of service for sellers.
