Shop Pay: how Shopify's wallet works and what non-Shopify stores can use
Checked
Shop Pay is Shopify's accelerated checkout. It saves a shopper's email, payment method and shipping and billing details so returning customers can buy in one tap on Shopify stores and in the Shop app. It is part of Shopify Payments and charged at Shopify Payments rates. Stores on other platforms can add Shop Pay through Shopify's Shop Pay Wallet API, but only if the business qualifies for Shopify Payments.

What PlatformDTC does
PlatformDTC checkout does not offer Shop Pay, which belongs to Shopify. Its own one-tap wallet, DTCPay, does the same job: a returning shopper whose card is saved in the PlatformDTC network checks out in one tap, next to Apple Pay, Google Pay and PayPal.
How Shop Pay works for shoppers
A shopper saves their email, payment method and addresses at checkout; to save payment details they must give an email address. On later visits Shop Pay recognises them and fills everything in. It accepts credit and debit cards and the local payment methods Shopify Payments processes, and eligible US stores can take HSA and FSA payments for qualifying products.
Using Shop Pay outside Shopify
Shopify lets businesses add Shop Pay to another commerce platform without moving to Shopify. The steps it lists:
- Sign up for Shop Pay to get a Shopify admin and API credentials.
- Activate Shopify Payments and connect a bank account; the business must be eligible and located where Shopify Payments is available.
- Connect your checkout domains and build the button with the Shop Pay Wallet API; your checkout must collect the customer's email before payment.
- Complete payout details within 21 days of the first Shop Pay payment.
Frequently asked questions
- Can a store that isn't on Shopify offer Shop Pay?
- Yes, through the Shop Pay Wallet API, but the business must be eligible for Shopify Payments and located where Shopify Payments is available, and it needs developer work to integrate.
- What happens if I don't finish Shop Pay payout setup?
- Shopify says business and banking details must be completed within 21 days of the first Shop Pay payment; otherwise all payments are automatically refunded to customers.
- What do PlatformDTC stores use instead of Shop Pay?
- DTCPay, PlatformDTC's one-tap wallet. A returning shopper whose card is already saved in the PlatformDTC network pays in one tap, with Apple Pay, Google Pay and PayPal also in the express row.
