Venmo for online stores: how Venmo checkout works through PayPal
Checked
Venmo is PayPal's US payment app. On a checkout built with PayPal's JavaScript SDK, a Venmo button lets the shopper approve the payment in the Venmo app: on a phone they switch to the app, on a computer they scan a QR code. PayPal limits Venmo checkout to US-based merchants and US-based shoppers paying in US dollars, and the shopper needs the Venmo app installed. Venmo can be saved during a purchase for later charges.

What PlatformDTC does
PlatformDTC checkout has no separate Venmo setting. On stores that don't take cards through PayPal, the store's own PayPal button can show Venmo to shoppers PayPal finds eligible (US store, US shopper, US dollars); on stores that take cards through PayPal, the button is PayPal-only.
How a shopper pays with Venmo
On a phone, the shopper taps the Venmo button, approves the payment in the Venmo app and is sent back to the store. On a computer, they scan a QR code with the Venmo app to approve, then return to the store.
What a store needs for Venmo
Venmo comes through PayPal, not as a separate processor. PayPal lists what Venmo checkout does and doesn't cover:
- Supported: one-time payments, authorize-then-capture, online purchases, saving Venmo during a purchase, and the shipping module.
- Not supported: payments split across several sellers, saving Venmo without a purchase, and buy online, pay in store.
- Refunds: PayPal says PayPal and Venmo transactions can only be refunded within 180 days of the payment.
Frequently asked questions
- Can shoppers outside the US pay with Venmo?
- No. PayPal says Venmo checkout is for US-based merchants and US-based consumers only, with payment in US dollars.
- How do I add Venmo to my checkout?
- Through PayPal: the checkout must use PayPal's JavaScript SDK, and Venmo is switched on under the PayPal and Venmo payment option in the PayPal developer dashboard. On PlatformDTC there is nothing to set up; PayPal's button decides who sees Venmo.
- Can Venmo be used for subscription renewals?
- PayPal lets merchants save Venmo during a purchase and charge it later. PlatformDTC renews PayPal subscriptions from the saved PayPal account and doesn't promise Venmo for renewals.
