iDEAL for online stores: how it works and what the Wero switch means
Checked
iDEAL is the Netherlands' online bank payment: the shopper picks iDEAL, approves the payment in their own banking app, and the store learns straight away whether it worked. It is euro only, cannot be charged back, and refunds go out as a bank credit. Since March 2026 it carries the name iDEAL | Wero, and Dutch banks are moving iDEAL payments onto Wero, with the switch due to finish by 31 December 2027.

What PlatformDTC does
PlatformDTC checkout does not offer iDEAL today; Dutch shoppers can pay by card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, PayPal in euros, or Klarna on one-time orders up to €5,000.
How a shopper pays with iDEAL
The shopper chooses iDEAL at checkout and is sent to their own bank, where they confirm the payment with the bank's usual second step (app approval or similar). The exact screens depend on the bank. The shop gets an immediate success or failure, so the order can be confirmed on the spot.
If your business is registered in the Netherlands, the iDEAL scheme rules require your website to show your KVK (Chamber of Commerce) number. Businesses elsewhere show the equivalent local registration number.
iDEAL becomes Wero: the dates that matter
European Payments Initiative (EPI), the company behind Wero, bought iDEAL. The change is happening in steps, and Dutch shoppers keep paying through their own bank throughout.
| When | What happens |
|---|---|
| 29 January – 31 March 2026 | Checkouts must show the name and logo "iDEAL | Wero" |
| October 2026 | All Dutch banks connected to Wero; iDEAL payments start moving onto Wero's system |
| Q4 2026 | Stripe lets shops add Wero next to iDEAL for Dutch buyers |
| 31 December 2027 | Target date to finish moving from iDEAL to Wero (EPI and Dutch banks) |
| 1 January 2028 | Target for full Wero purchase protection |
What it means for your store: refunds and disputes
iDEAL payments cannot be disputed through the shopper's bank, so there are no chargebacks. Shoppers with a problem come to you. Refunds can be full or partial for up to 180 days; Stripe notes a refund can sit pending for up to 7 days before it counts as done.
Stripe says shops should plan to finish moving to Wero during 2027 and puts the end of iDEAL somewhere in 2027 to 2028. Check with your payment provider for your own cut-over date.
