Wero for online stores: how the new European wallet works
Checked
Wero is a European payment wallet run by European Payments Initiative (EPI). The shopper links their bank account to Wero, scans a QR code at checkout, and approves in the Wero app; Stripe says payments usually finish in under 10 seconds. It works in euros for shoppers in Belgium, France, Germany, Luxembourg and the Netherlands. Wero has no chargebacks today and no recurring payments on Stripe, and it is taking over from iDEAL in the Netherlands.

What PlatformDTC does
PlatformDTC checkout does not offer Wero today. Shoppers in Wero's five countries can pay by card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, PayPal in euros, or Klarna on one-time orders.
How a shopper pays with Wero
At checkout the shopper picks Wero and lands on Wero's page, which shows a QR code. Scanning it opens the Wero app on their phone, where they approve the payment. The money moves from their bank account straight away and they return to your site.
Wero and iDEAL
EPI bought iDEAL, and Dutch banks are moving iDEAL payments onto Wero. All Dutch banks are due to be connected by October 2026, and the full move is targeted for 31 December 2027. Stripe lets shops offer Wero next to iDEAL for Dutch buyers from Q4 2026 and suggests testing the two side by side before switching iDEAL off.
Who can accept Wero
Stripe accounts in most EU and EEA countries can accept Wero. Stripe does not list the UK, US or Switzerland as business locations. Stripe Checkout does not support Wero in subscription mode, and the express wallet row does not show it.
