What does the Stripe restricted_card decline code mean?
Checked
The Stripe decline code restricted_card means the customer can't use this card to make this payment, and Stripe notes it may have been reported lost or stolen. Banks also restrict cards by region or country. Stripe's next step is for the customer to contact their card issuer. Until the bank lifts the restriction, the card will keep failing, so ask for another payment method.

What PlatformDTC does
PlatformDTC treats restricted_card as never-retry: at checkout it is not moved to a backup processor, and the shopper is asked for another card. On renewals, on the fixed schedule or with Smart retry, it is not retried; the subscription is held past due and the customer receives a one-click update-card link. PlatformDTC also stops on Visa's raw 62, which Visa itself allows to be reattempted.
Why it happens
The bank has put a restriction on the card. That might follow a lost or stolen report, or be a rule that the card works only in certain countries or regions.
What the shopper can do
Pay with a different card or wallet. Call your bank to ask what the restriction is and whether it can be removed.
What the store can do
Present a neutral decline and show alternative payment methods. Do not retry on a schedule.
For developers
On Visa, raw code 62 is "Restricted card (card invalid in this region or country)", which Visa places in Category 2 (reattempt permitted up to 20 times in 30 days). PlatformDTC's renewal engine still treats 62 as a stop because a region rule does not change between attempts.
Frequently asked questions
- Does restricted_card mean the card was stolen?
- Not necessarily. Stripe says it may have been reported lost or stolen, but banks also restrict cards by country or region.
- Should I retry restricted_card?
- No. The restriction remains until the bank removes it, so ask for another payment method.
