Stripe · Decline codes

What does the Stripe revocation_of_authorization decline code mean?

Checked

The Stripe decline code revocation_of_authorization is described by Stripe as a decline for an unknown reason, and the customer is told to contact their card issuer. The name points to an authorization being revoked, typically a cardholder asking their bank to stop paying a particular merchant or subscription. Do not keep charging the card; contact the customer and ask how they want to continue.

What PlatformDTC does

PlatformDTC classes revocation_of_authorization as a hard decline: at checkout it is never sent to the backup processor, and on renewals, on the fixed schedule or with Smart retry, it is not retried. The subscription is held past due rather than cancelled, and the customer receives a signed one-click link to switch to another card or payment method.

Why it happens

Stripe does not publish a specific reason. The code's name refers to a revoked authorization, for example the cardholder telling the bank to stop payments to this business.

What the shopper can do

If you meant to stop paying, cancel with the store too so no further attempts are made. If not, ask your bank to lift the stop or pay with a different card.

What the store can do

Treat it like a cancellation request until the customer says otherwise. Retrying a revoked card invites disputes.

For developers

Visa returns R0 (stop this payment), R1 (stop all future payments) or R3 (stop all merchants) as raw network codes for stop-payment orders; Visa's rules put all three in Category 1, so never resubmit the same credential. Honour outcome.advice_code = do_not_try_again whenever it is present.

Frequently asked questions

Is revocation_of_authorization a dispute?
No, it is a decline on a new charge. But charging the card again after a revocation is a common way to end up with a dispute.
How is it different from revocation_of_all_authorizations?
Stripe describes both as declines for an unknown reason. By name, one refers to a single authorization being revoked and the other to all of them. Handle both the same way: stop retrying and contact the customer.
