Stripe · Decline codes
What does the Stripe card_not_supported decline code mean?
Checked
Stripe's card_not_supported decline code means the card doesn't support this type of purchase. Some cards are limited to certain kinds of business, such as FSA or HSA cards, and some issuers block purchases from certain countries. Stripe says the customer needs to contact their card issuer to check the card can be used for this kind of purchase. Retrying the same card will give the same answer until that changes.

What PlatformDTC does
PlatformDTC's checkout never moves a card_not_supported decline to a backup processor, since the restriction sits with the card. On renewals, on the default fixed schedule and with Smart retry alike, it is never retried automatically. The subscription is held past due instead of cancelled, the card is marked blocked, and the customer is emailed a one-click link to add a new card, re-sent up to 4 times per billing cycle at least 3 days apart.
Why it happens
Stripe's guide on card declines mentions that FSA and HSA cards are often limited to certain businesses such as healthcare providers, and that some issuers do not allow purchases from certain countries or outside their own.
What the shopper can do
Pay with another card, PayPal, or a different method. If you want to keep using this card, ask your bank whether it can be used for online purchases from this kind of store.
What the store can do
Make sure other payment options are visible after the decline. Nothing in the store's setup makes an unsupported card work.
Frequently asked questions
- Why won't my card work on this site when it works elsewhere?
- Some cards are limited to particular merchants, countries or purchase types. The bank decides this, so only the bank can tell you whether this purchase is allowed.
- Should the store retry card_not_supported?
- No. The card does not support this purchase, so a retry will be declined the same way. Ask the customer for another payment method.
