What does the Stripe revocation_of_all_authorizations decline code mean?
Checked
The Stripe decline code revocation_of_all_authorizations is listed by Stripe as a decline for an unknown reason, with the customer told to contact their card issuer. Its name refers to authorizations being revoked, which in card terms usually means the cardholder or bank has stopped future payments. Treat it as final for this card: don't retry, and ask the customer how they want to pay.

What PlatformDTC does
PlatformDTC never retries revocation_of_all_authorizations and does not offer the backup processor at checkout. On renewals, on the fixed schedule or with Smart retry, it stops at once: the subscription is held past due, not cancelled, the card is marked blocked, and the customer gets a one-click link to choose another payment method, re-sent up to 4 times per cycle at least 3 days apart.
Why it happens
Stripe gives no further reason for this code. In practice, revocation codes appear when a cardholder has asked their bank to stop payments, often recurring ones, or when the bank has stopped them itself.
For a subscription this can mean the customer wanted to cancel but did it at the bank instead of with the store.
What the shopper can do
If you still want the order or subscription, pay with a different card, or ask your bank to remove the stop for this store.
What the store can do
Stop all charges on this card and reach out to the customer. Charging it again risks a dispute and breaks network rules on Visa stop-payment codes.
For developers
Check charge.outcome.network_decline_code. Visa's stop codes are R0 (stop this payment), R1 (stop all future payments) and R3 (stop all merchants); all three are Category 1, and after one a merchant must never resubmit for the same payment credential. On Mastercard, Merchant Advice Code 21 means "Stop recurring payment".
Frequently asked questions
- Does revocation_of_all_authorizations mean the customer cancelled?
- Often, though Stripe does not say so. The customer or bank has likely stopped payments to the store. Contact the customer before doing anything else.
- Can I retry next month?
- No. A stop on future payments stays until the cardholder removes it. Ask for a new payment method instead.
