What does PayPal processor response code 0580 mean?
Checked
PayPal processor response code 0580 (UNAUTHORIZED_TRANSACTION) means the payment was refused as not authorized for this card. PayPal gives no more detail than that label. It points to a restriction on the card or account rather than a temporary problem, so the shopper should ask their bank about it or pay with a different card instead of retrying.

What PlatformDTC does
PlatformDTC maps PayPal 0580 to transaction_not_allowed, a decline no retry can fix. On either retry schedule (the default Fixed schedule or Smart retry), the renewal is never re-attempted on that card: the subscription is held past due (not cancelled) and the customer gets a one-click update-card link, re-sent up to 4 times per cycle. If those reminders run out and the store's auto-cancel setting is on, the subscription ends as involuntary churn.
Why it happens
PayPal's label says only that the transaction was unauthorized.
What the shopper can do
Pay with a different card or your PayPal balance.
If you want to use this card, ask your bank whether online or international payments are switched off.
What the store can do
Ask for a different payment method rather than retrying.
Keep the raw code with the order so support can see which refusal happened.
For developers
PayPal returns 0580 in processor_response.response_code on the capture (purchase_units[].payments.captures[]) or authorization of a card payment. PayPal's own name for it is UNAUTHORIZED_TRANSACTION.
Declined card payments can also carry payment_advice_code in processor_response, the card network's advice; store it next to the response code.
Frequently asked questions
- Is 0580 a fraud decline?
- PayPal doesn't say so. Its label is UNAUTHORIZED_TRANSACTION; fraud has its own code (9500).
- Can the shopper fix 0580 themselves?
- Sometimes: if the bank blocked a purchase type the cardholder can switch on, a call or banking-app setting may clear it. Otherwise another card is the way through.
