What does PayPal processor response code 0390 mean?

PayPal processor response code 0390 (ACCOUNT_NOT_FOUND) means the card's bank could not find an account for the card details sent. PayPal's label gives no further reason. Retrying the same details will fail again; the shopper should re-enter the card carefully or use a different one.

What PlatformDTC does
PlatformDTC treats 0390 as invalid_account, a hard decline. On either retry schedule (the default Fixed schedule or Smart retry), nothing is retried on the same card; the merchant dashboard says the customer needs to pay with a different card, and the customer receives a signed update-card link (no login) plus up to 4 reminders per billing cycle.
Why it happens
The bank looked up the card number and found nothing. Typing errors, a card replaced after loss, or a closed account all end here.
What the shopper can do
Check the card number digit by digit and try once more.
If it fails again, the card is probably no longer valid: use another card or your PayPal balance.
What the store can do
Treat 0390 as a dead credential on saved cards: ask the customer for a new card rather than retrying.
If many different shoppers hit 0390 at once, check your card form for a field-mapping problem.
For developers
PayPal returns 0390 in processor_response.response_code on the capture (purchase_units[].payments.captures[]) or authorization of a card payment. PayPal's own name for it is ACCOUNT_NOT_FOUND.
Declined card payments can also carry payment_advice_code in processor_response, the card network's advice; store it next to the response code.
Frequently asked questions
- Will retrying 0390 later help?
- No. The account isn't there today and won't appear tomorrow; a corrected or new card is needed.
- Is 0390 the same as an invalid card number?
- PayPal lists it separately as ACCOUNT_NOT_FOUND, but the fix is the same: correct details or a different card.
