What does Braintree 2010 “Card Issuer Declined CVV” mean?
Checked
Braintree 2010 “Card Issuer Declined CVV” means the bank rejected the security code on the back (or front, on Amex) of the card. It is a hard decline: the same code will fail again. The shopper should re-enter it carefully. Braintree maps it to Visa category 3, so repeated wrong codes count toward Visa's retry limit of 15 in 30 days.

What PlatformDTC does
PlatformDTC does not connect to Braintree. The same bank answer on Stripe is incorrect_cvc; PlatformDTC shows a hint to recheck the code, never offers a backup processor for it and never retries it, since the shopper has to supply the right digits.
Why it happens
A typo, the shopper reading the wrong number, or a code from an older card. Many failed codes on one card can also mean someone is guessing.
What the shopper can do
Re-enter the 3-digit code on the back of the card (4 digits on the front for American Express).
What the store can do
Keep the CVV field visible and labelled. If one card fails CVV many times, block further attempts; Braintree's risk threshold rules can do this.
For developers
Braintree returns processor_response_code 2010 with processor_response_text “Card Issuer Declined CVV” and processor_response_type “hard_declined” on the Transaction object. Braintree maps it to Visa category 3 (issuer cannot approve with these details): at most 15 retries in 30 days.
Frequently asked questions
- Can a 2010 decline mean card testing?
- It can when many codes are tried on the same card. One failed code is usually a typo.
- Is Braintree 2010 a gateway rejection?
- No. A CVV gateway rejection comes from your own Braintree rules. 2010 means the bank itself declined the code.
