Stripe · Decline codes

What does the Stripe currency_not_supported decline code mean?

Checked

Stripe's currency_not_supported decline code means the card doesn't support the currency the payment was made in. Stripe says the customer needs to check with their issuer whether the card can be used for that currency. Retrying in the same currency will be declined again. The shopper can use a different card, or the store can charge in a currency the card accepts if it sells in more than one.

What PlatformDTC does

PlatformDTC's checkout treats currency_not_supported as a never-retry decline and does not offer a backup processor. On renewals, on the default fixed schedule and with Smart retry alike, it is never retried automatically. The subscription is held past due instead of cancelled, the card is marked blocked, and the customer is emailed a one-click link to add a new card, re-sent up to 4 times per billing cycle at least 3 days apart.

Why it happens

The issuer does not allow this card to pay in the currency of the order.

What the shopper can do

Try a different card or payment method, or ask your bank whether the card can pay in this currency.

What the store can do

If your store prices in more than one currency, showing the shopper's own currency can avoid this decline. Otherwise, point the shopper to another payment method.
