What does PayPal processor response code 00N7 mean?
Checked
PayPal processor response code 00N7 (CVV2_FAILURE_POSSIBLE_RETRY_WITH_CVV) means the card's security code check failed, and PayPal's label suggests the payment may go through if retried with the correct code. The shopper should re-enter the 3 or 4 digit code carefully. Merchants should not resend the same code; a corrected code from the shopper is what helps.

What PlatformDTC does
PlatformDTC treats 00N7 as incorrect_cvc, a hard decline. On either retry schedule (the default Fixed schedule or Smart retry), nothing is retried on the same card; the merchant dashboard says the customer needs to pay with a different card, and the customer receives a signed update-card link (no login) plus up to 4 reminders per billing cycle.
Why it happens
The CVV2 didn't match. PayPal's label adds that a retry with the right code may succeed.
What the shopper can do
Check the code on the card and type it again.
What the store can do
Let the shopper correct the code at checkout.
A saved card can't supply its code on a renewal, so a code problem there means asking the customer to re-enter the card.
For developers
PayPal returns 00N7 in processor_response.response_code on the capture (purchase_units[].payments.captures[]) or authorization of a card payment. PayPal's own name for it is CVV2_FAILURE_POSSIBLE_RETRY_WITH_CVV.
Visa has a similarly named raw response code, N7 ("Decline for CVV2 failure"); in the Visa Core Rules (24 October 2026, Table 7-2) that code is category 3 (revalidate payment information). PayPal's code list doesn't map its codes to Visa's, so treat this as context, not a translation.
The processor_response object also carries cvv_code, the security-code check result, which helps support tell a typo from a mismatch.
Frequently asked questions
- Can a renewal be retried with the CVV?
- Saved cards are charged without the security code. If the code was the problem, the customer re-enters the card.
- Is 00N7 different from 5110?
- PayPal labels 5110 CVV2_FAILURE; 00N7 adds 'possible retry with CVV'. Both point to the security code.
