Card issuer response codes (ISO 8583) · Decline codes
What does card decline code 58 mean?
Checked
Code 58 is an ISO 8583 issuer response code. Visa defines it as "transaction not allowed at terminal" and Mastercard as "transaction not permitted to acquirer / terminal". The decline concerns the merchant's setup, not the cardholder: this terminal or merchant account may not accept this transaction type. Visa does not name 58 in Categories 1 to 3, so it is Category 4, with up to 20 reattempts in 30 days.

What PlatformDTC does
PlatformDTC is stricter than Visa on 58: it files a raw 58 as never-retry. On either retry schedule, fixed or Smart retry, a renewal is not retried; the subscription is held past due and the customer is asked for another card, because a repeat on the same merchant setup gives the same answer. The per-card network cap still applies on top.
Why it happens
The merchant account or terminal isn't configured for this kind of transaction, for example a card type, currency or channel it is not set up to accept.
What the store can do
If several customers hit 58, talk to your processor. A different card brand or PayPal lets the customer pay meanwhile.
For developers
On Stripe the raw issuer code arrives in charge.outcome.network_decline_code (here "58"), next to Stripe's own decline_code. Read it together with the card brand: the same two characters can mean different things on Visa and Mastercard. Visa lists 58 only as a Category 4 generic code; PlatformDTC's networkDeclineCodeMap places it in never-retry anyway.
Frequently asked questions
- Is code 58 the customer's fault?
- No. It is about the merchant's terminal or acquirer setup.
- Why does PlatformDTC not retry 58 if Visa allows it?
- Retrying the same setup gets the same refusal and adds a decline to the store's record. Asking for another card is faster.
