Card issuer response codes (ISO 8583) · Decline codes
What does card decline code 57 mean?
Checked
Code 57 is an ISO 8583 issuer response code meaning "transaction not permitted to cardholder" (Mastercard: "transaction not permitted to issuer / cardholder"). The bank does not allow this card to make this type of purchase, for example a card restricted to certain merchants or countries. Visa lists 57 in Category 1, so the same card must never be resubmitted. The shopper needs another card.

What PlatformDTC does
PlatformDTC stops on a raw 57. A Visa checkout declined 57 is never offered to the backup processor. On either retry schedule, fixed or Smart retry, the renewal is never retried; the subscription is held past due and the customer receives a signed one-click link to add a different card, re-sent up to 4 times per billing cycle.
Why it happens
The card carries a restriction: some cards only work for certain kinds of merchants, in their home country, or below a set amount. The bank applies it to every merchant of that kind.
What the shopper can do
Use a different card or PayPal. Calling the bank may unlock the card for this kind of purchase for future orders.
For developers
On Stripe the raw issuer code arrives in charge.outcome.network_decline_code (here "57"), next to Stripe's own decline_code. Read it together with the card brand: the same two characters can mean different things on Visa and Mastercard. PlatformDTC's renewal table also treats Stripe's transaction_not_allowed decline code as never-retry. At checkout, Stripe's transaction_not_allowed by itself is reroutable, but a Visa raw 57 vetoes that.
Frequently asked questions
- Is code 57 the same as code 58?
- No. 57 is about the cardholder's permissions, 58 about the merchant's terminal or acquirer.
- Can the customer fix code 57?
- Only by asking their bank to allow this type of purchase, or by using another card.
