What PlatformDTC does
PlatformDTC treats 20054 from Checkout.com as final for that card. Checkout will not move the payment to a backup processor; the shopper needs a different card or corrected details. A subscription renewal declined with 20054 is never retried on the expired card: the subscription is held past due and the customer is emailed a link to update it.
Why it happens
The card reached its expiry month, or the shopper typed an old expiry date. Saved cards on subscriptions hit this when the bank issues a replacement.
What the shopper can do
Enter the new card from the bank, or check the expiry date typed.
What the store can do
For saved cards, email the customer a link to update the card. Do not cycle retries on the old details.
For developers
The payment comes back with status Declined, response_code 20054 and a response_summary such as "Expired card" (Checkout.com notes the text can vary by endpoint). Checkout.com's Visa table puts this code in category 3, which it pairs with recommendation code 01 (updated or additional information required); read processing.recommendation_code on the response.
