What does Braintree 2009 “No Such Issuer” mean?
Checked
Braintree 2009 “No Such Issuer” means the card number does not point to a known issuing bank, or the issuer could not be reached. It is a hard decline, and Braintree maps it to Visa category 1: the issuer will never approve, and Visa fines every retry. The shopper should contact their bank or pay with another card.

What PlatformDTC does
PlatformDTC does not connect to Braintree. The network's no-such-issuer answer is Visa 15, which sits in PlatformDTC's never-retry list: renewals stop, the subscriber is asked to update the card, and checkout never moves it to a backup processor.
Why it happens
The first digits of the card number do not belong to any issuer the network knows, usually a typo in the first six digits. Braintree also notes it can come from a connectivity problem with the issuer.
What the store can do
Do not retry automatically. Ask the shopper for another card. If many different cards fail with 2009 at once, contact Braintree, since that pattern suggests a connection problem rather than bad cards.
For developers
Braintree returns processor_response_code 2009 with processor_response_text “No Such Issuer” and processor_response_type “hard_declined” on the Transaction object. Braintree maps it to Visa category 1 (issuer will never approve): Visa fines every retry of the same card.
Frequently asked questions
- Is Braintree 2009 ever temporary?
- Braintree says it can come from issuer connectivity. Because it is Visa category 1, still do not retry the same card; ask for another one.
- What fee applies if I retry a 2009?
- Braintree lists $0.10 per domestic and $0.15 per international retry beyond Visa's threshold for category 1.
