What does Braintree 2002 “Limit Exceeded” mean?
Checked
Braintree 2002 “Limit Exceeded” means this payment would push the account past its withdrawal limit. It is a soft decline. Braintree says the customer needs to ask the bank to change the limit or pay another way. Because it is Visa category 2, a later retry is allowed, up to 15 times in 30 days, once the limit has room again.

What PlatformDTC does
PlatformDTC does not connect to Braintree. On its Stripe checkout limit refusals arrive as card_velocity_exceeded or withdrawal_count_limit_exceeded, and the network's amount-limit code is Visa 61; PlatformDTC treats all of them as temporary and retries renewals on a short +2/+5/+8 day schedule.
Why it happens
Banks cap how much can leave an account per day or per transaction. A large order, or several purchases the same day, can cross that cap even when the balance is fine.
What the shopper can do
Ask the bank to lift the limit, wait for it to reset, or pay with a different card.
What the store can do
Point the shopper to another card or PayPal, or split a large order if that suits your business. Retrying a subscription a few days later often works once the limit resets.
For developers
Braintree returns processor_response_code 2002 with processor_response_text “Limit Exceeded” and processor_response_type “soft_declined” on the Transaction object. Braintree maps it to Visa category 2 (issuer cannot approve at this time): at most 15 retries in 30 days.
