What does Braintree 2001 “Insufficient Funds” mean?
Checked
Braintree 2001 “Insufficient Funds” means the account behind the card could not cover the amount at that moment. It is a soft decline, and Braintree notes that an attempt on a later date may succeed. The shopper can top up, wait for payday or use another card. Braintree maps it to Visa category 2, which allows up to 15 retries in 30 days.

What PlatformDTC does
PlatformDTC does not connect to Braintree; on its Stripe checkout this answer is insufficient_funds. PlatformDTC tries such renewals up to six times in all, retrying at +2, +5, +8, +13 and +18 days, moved to the subscriber's payday when one falls within seven days, and never more than once a day.
Why it happens
The balance or available credit was lower than the order total when the bank checked.
What the shopper can do
Check the balance or credit limit, add money, then try again, or pay with another card.
What the store can do
For a one-off order, suggest another card or PayPal. For a subscription, retry on a later date instead of right away; money usually arrives on payday, so a retry the same hour asks an empty account the same question.
For developers
Braintree returns processor_response_code 2001 with processor_response_text “Insufficient Funds” and processor_response_type “soft_declined” on the Transaction object. Braintree maps it to Visa category 2 (issuer cannot approve at this time): at most 15 retries in 30 days.
Frequently asked questions
- When should I retry a Braintree 2001 decline?
- Later, not immediately. Braintree says later attempts may succeed, and Visa category 2 allows up to 15 retries in 30 days. Retrying after the shopper's payday has the best chance.
- Is insufficient funds the shopper's fault or mine?
- It is the shopper's account. Nothing in your store setup causes it.
