PayTo for online stores: how Australian shoppers pay by bank
Checked
PayTo is Australia's real-time bank payment for one-off and recurring charges, run by Australian Payments Plus. The shopper gives a PayID or BSB and account number, then approves a PayTo agreement in their banking app; Stripe usually reports the result within 60 seconds. It works in Australian dollars, supports subscriptions, allows refunds for two years, and has final, non-appealable disputes. Several big banks reject agreements over A$25,000 or with no maximum amount.

How a shopper pays with PayTo
The shopper enters a PayID (an identifier such as a phone number or email linked to their account) or their BSB and account number. Their bank then sends a request, usually by push notification or email, to approve the agreement. Australian Payments Plus says agreements are authorised and managed in online banking, so shoppers can see and control them in one place. Amazon.com.au added PayTo at checkout in June 2025.
Agreements for subscriptions
For one-off payments Stripe creates the agreement automatically. For recurring charges you set the amount (fixed or a maximum), schedule and end date. Stripe advises the least permissive terms you can, and always an amount cap, because several banks reject agreements without one.
