Card issuer response codes (ISO 8583) · Decline codes
What does card decline code 96 mean?
Checked
Code 96 is an ISO 8583 issuer response code meaning "system malfunction" on Visa and "system error" on Mastercard. A technical failure at the bank or network stopped the authorization; nothing is wrong with the card. Visa lists 96 in Category 2, allowing up to 20 reattempts in 30 days. Retrying after a short wait normally works, and the shopper can also switch payment methods.

What PlatformDTC does
PlatformDTC files a raw 96 as temporary. With Smart retry on, the renewal is retried 2, 5 and 8 days after the decline, four attempts at most, because technical faults recover on the first retries or not at all. At checkout, Stripe's processing_error can be offered to the store's backup card processor when one is configured.
Why it happens
A system at the issuer or network failed while handling the request.
What the store can do
Let shoppers retry, and check your processor's status page if many payments show 96 at once.
For developers
On Stripe the raw issuer code arrives in charge.outcome.network_decline_code (here "96"), next to Stripe's own decline_code. Read it together with the card brand: the same two characters can mean different things on Visa and Mastercard. PlatformDTC maps raw 96 and processing_error to its temporary category.
