Card issuer response codes (ISO 8583) · Decline codes
What does card decline code 6P mean?
Checked
Code 6P is a Visa issuer response code meaning "verification data failed". Visa's rules explain that the cardholder identification sent with the payment did not match the issuer's records. Visa lists 6P in Category 3, data quality: revalidate the payment information, with up to 20 reattempts in 30 days allowed. The shopper should check the details they entered, such as name and address, or use another card.

What PlatformDTC does
PlatformDTC has no rule for a raw 6P, so the processor code decides. On either retry schedule a data error such as incorrect_cvc is a hard stop and the customer gets an update-card link; with Smart retry on, an unrecognised code is timed like a funds decline and logged for review, within the per-card network cap.
Why it happens
The identification data in the payment did not match what the bank holds for the cardholder.
What the shopper can do
Check the details typed at checkout and try again, or use a different card.
For developers
On Stripe the raw issuer code arrives in charge.outcome.network_decline_code (here "6P"), next to Stripe's own decline_code. Read it together with the card brand: the same two characters can mean different things on Visa and Mastercard. Visa's Table 7-2 wording: "Verification Failed [Cardholder Identification does not match Issuer records]".
