American Express P08 chargeback: Multiple Processing (duplicate charge)
Checked
American Express reason code P08, Multiple Processing, means the Cardmember says the same charge was submitted more than once. Amex treats the first transaction as the valid one. Answer with proof both transactions are valid separate purchases, or that they are an excluded type such as separately numbered airline, cruise or lodging tickets. Refunding a genuine duplicate immediately avoids it.

What PlatformDTC does
For a duplicate-charge dispute, PlatformDTC's response states that this is the only charge recorded against the order and that any other charge belongs to a separate order with its own items, address and fulfilment record, alongside the order details and tracking. With "Answer a chargeback automatically" switched on, it sends the response to the bank for you before the deadline.
What it means
Two identical charges where the Cardmember made one purchase.
Why customers file it
Double clicks, retried submissions, or two orders the Cardmember thinks were one.
Evidence that wins
For every Amex code, a credit that directly offsets the disputed charge is also an accepted response.
- Proof both transactions are valid and separate
- Separate order numbers, items and shipments
How to prevent it
- Disable the pay button after one click
- Refund accidental duplicates right away
For developers
On Stripe the dispute object arrives with reason "duplicate" and the card network's own code in payment_method_details.card.network_reason_code; listen for charge.dispute.created and read evidence_details.due_by for the deadline.
American Express uses one letter plus two digits for US and Canada merchants; elsewhere it uses four-digit ISO codes, and each letter code sits under one.
