American Express C14 chargeback: Paid by Other Means explained
Checked
American Express reason code C14, Paid Through Other Means, means the Cardmember says they already paid for this purchase another way, such as with a different card, cash or a voucher. The chargeback is limited to the part paid by other means. Answer with proof the other payment was for something else, the other payment method was invalid, no other payment was received, or a credit was issued.

What PlatformDTC does
For a duplicate-charge dispute, PlatformDTC's response states that this is the only charge recorded against the order and that any other charge belongs to a separate order with its own items, address and fulfilment record, alongside the order details and tracking. With "Answer a chargeback automatically" switched on, it sends the response to the bank for you before the deadline.
What it means
The Cardmember says the purchase was paid twice, once on Amex and once another way.
Why customers file it
A failed payment retried with another method, or a voucher or insurance that was expected to cover the charge.
Evidence that wins
For every Amex code, a credit that directly offsets the disputed charge is also an accepted response.
- Proof the other payment was for a different purchase
- Proof the other payment method was invalid
- Proof no other payment was received
- Proof of a credit
How to prevent it
- Show a clear confirmation after payment
- Refund a second payment for the same order immediately
For developers
On Stripe the dispute object arrives with reason "duplicate" and the card network's own code in payment_method_details.card.network_reason_code; listen for charge.dispute.created and read evidence_details.due_by for the deadline.
American Express uses one letter plus two digits for US and Canada merchants; elsewhere it uses four-digit ISO codes, and each letter code sits under one.
