How do Malaysian shoppers pay online?
Checked
Malaysian shoppers often pay online with FPX (Financial Process Exchange), which lets them pay with their bank login. PayNet operates FPX with participating Malaysian banks, and Stripe calls it a common payment method in Malaysia, with payments from 1 to 30,000 ringgit for consumers. GrabPay, a balance-based wallet, is also popular, along with cards. Note that Stripe accounts in Malaysia can't accept American Express.

What PlatformDTC does
PlatformDTC checkout does not offer FPX or GrabPay today. Malaysian shoppers can pay by card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, or the store's PayPal in US dollars or another of its 22 currencies, not ringgit; a store whose Stripe account is in Malaysia can't take American Express.
How FPX works
The shopper picks their bank, signs in to online banking and approves the payment, then returns to the store. FPX is single-use, so it doesn't fit repeat billing.
GrabPay and cards
GrabPay asks the shopper to confirm with a one-time password. Stripe accounts in Malaysia can accept UnionPay cards but not American Express.
Frequently asked questions
- Who operates FPX?
- PayNet, together with participating Malaysian financial institutions.
- Does PayPal charge in ringgit on PlatformDTC?
- No. PayPal takes ringgit only on a PayPal account in Malaysia, so a market priced in ringgit hides the PayPal button. Price the market in a PayPal currency such as US dollars or Singapore dollars if you want PayPal to show.
